A new tax intended to rescue Alabama’s most populous county from a budget crisis became law on Friday.
Gov. Bob Riley signed the occupational tax into law after the Senate, on a 12-to-9 vote with 10 abstentions, approved it. The move cleared the way for about 1,000 laid-off Jefferson County workers to begin returning to jobs.
